Walked in and was kind of disturbed at how dirty the restaurant was but the $5.95 specials drew us in. Not worth it at ALL. The food looked okay but once you started eating it was clear it wasn't what you ordered. It was a shame that by the time we realized this, we were already across the city with our takeout. I got the honey garlic pork with rice and I don't know WHAT that was, but it wasn't pork. My friends got the lo mein, the chicken balls and rice, and the chicken wing lo mein and they all felt the same. It would have made more sense to go down the street and pay $6 more to get some actual decent food. Also, the "pork" I ate is still sitting in my stomach, very unhappy if you catch my drift. Never again.
We come to Toronto from Hamilton just to go here. The service is so fast and we always leave with take home and it's always so cheap. A few times we've overdosed on the chicken balls. I don't know what they do but they are probably the best I've ever had.
Pork and char siu was soggy, couldn't finish it. And the chef doesn't take it lightly when you tell him it's bad to microwave meat - I didn't ask for it to be microwaved.
con:If you can avoid it, don't go to the bathroom.Pros:the food is great, and won't cost you an arm an a leg. Perfect for students on a budget that want to get really good BBQ pork and wonderful crispy noodles.
Not as good as it use to be. They raised their prices and the pork seemed like a cheper pice of meat. Its alright compared to Chinese food out side of Chinatown but it's not as good as it was.
This was one of the worst eating experiences in Toronto. I ordered the Roast Pork and Duck and the Steamed Chinese vegetables in oyster sauce. What I got was microwaved roast pork and duck which was still cold and veggies which were well steamed but tasteless. They forgot the oyster sauce
Vegetarian food sucks here. They took forever to bring me food (most people on my table were finished eating) AND I got food poisoning from it! Cheap doesn't always mean good.
With a name like Kom Jug, how can you go wrong
Dirty place, good food, very cheap.
My friend Al Sung introduced me to this place in 1980 or '81 and even though we've since gone our different ways, this place has been the one constant meeting point in all the years since then. The place is still nothing to look at, in terms of elegance and glitz, but the food is almost always good and the staff is great. All my friends have their fave dishes, be it BBQ Pork and Noodle Soup AKA "Ambrosia of the Gods", Squid with Salty Spice or my old stand-by,Assorted Meats and Rice. Go there and see for yourself. Start your own tradition...you'll be glad you did.
This place is amazing, if you can find it. Open late, cheap prices, simply outstanding Chinese cuisine. BBQ Pork is the best!
We visited there last Wed, the inside was disgusting and my wife refused to eat and afraid of food poisoning. There was a rumpled rug and a card board inside the front entrance, dirty dishes plied on a cart by the cashier near the chef. The rest of the bare floor was filthy, so was the cooler where they kept the sodas. We ordered three dishes which included the roast duck rice. The fried rice and the chow mein were so so. It was cheap and OK but nothing special. the rice was soggy and I tasted better duck in Florida where we lived. The men's washroom was filthy and stinked. I told my wife not to use the washroom because there was a puddle of water outside women's washroom. Half of a duck was $15 and whole duck was $25, not cheap. We were disappointed. We went back to another restaurant near there the next day (House of Gourmet) and had better duck and other food. Half duck was $11.95 and whole was $21.95. My wife also did not complaint because the restaurant was modern and clean.
Excellent food, excellent prices too. Great variety on the menu. Very unique food and nothing is the silly prepackaged crap some call Chinese food. Try Singapore noodles, and spicy beef (salty but good). The eating area is a dump, bathrooms in basement are the same, it's small and cramped. Consider take out. They are very busy all the time, but food arrives very fast. I make a trip here every year when I am in Toronto, never miss.
Old and dirty restaurant. Great Chinese bbq food. Really dirty washroom. Really cheap too
Maybe I was unlucky but my meal was hugely disappointing. I ordered the BBQ duck with rice. The duck was grisly, tough and flavorless. After all the good reviews I had excepted much better instead it was one of the most disappointing Chinese meals I've had. I won't go again.
Changed alot in last year. Prices up. Quality of ingredients down. Washroom never cleaned.
This is the best Chinese food I ever taste, i recommended 100%
Not sure if the place is still open for business. The original owners seem to have sold the place. New owners tried to keep the same thing going and lasted 3-4 years. The food was cheap but tasty and went there so many times. The bathrooms always stunk like pee and were beyond rescue, so don't go there expecting to have to pee. Fun times were had in a cheap, chinese style greasy spoon.
Cheap, good period.
First don't expect customer service...it's a Chinese joint.Food wise...had the bbq pork. I wouldn't say the best in North America. I would say it decent if you are hungry and need something quick. ..otherwise not my first choice.
Good value and I've been a patron for years—especially during university—but the restaurant desperately needs a facelift. The walls are cluttered with bristol board signs. I'm a big fan of no-frills Chinese dining, but this place is starting to look seriously run down.
Dare: Order any of the full meal plates - attempt to finish in one sitting.Best portion to price ratio in the city!
I used to go here mulitple times a week when I was a student - one week my mother came to visit and I took her for the best bbq pork in North America. The owner looked at her and asked "Is that your mother?". I said yes, and he proceeded to heap vegetables on the usually vegetable-less bbq pork that I'd been enjoying almost daily. I returned a couple years after moving away and of course visited my old haunt, the owner asked me where I'd been. If you want the best barbecue pork in Toronto, this is your place. If you want the best barbecue pork in Canada, this is your place. If you want THE BEST BARBECUE PORK IN NORTH AMERICA THIS. IS. YOUR. PLACE.
